The public is invited to experience the beauty of one of Kansas City’s oldest neighborhoods during the 22nd Annual Union Hill Garden Tour on Sunday, June 11. More than 20 private and community gardens are on the tour for viewing from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Tickets are available in advance online at unionhillkc.com or uchskc.org.

The self-guided tours begin at 31st Street and Grand Avenue and include complimentary transportation to take attendees throughout the neighborhood from 11:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Free parking is available in the KCPT parking lot which is located across the street from the KCPT building on the north side of 31st Street. Free garage parking will also be available adjacent to the new Café Europa and Underdog Wine Co. located on the west side of Gillham Road.

In addition to the self-guided tour, a string-quartet from the UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance will perform live, classical music from noon – 2:00 p.m. Made in the Shade is joining this year’s event, selling a wide variety of hosta plants during the tour. Union Hill Animal Hospital will have pet treats and goodie bags available along the tour.

Additionally, guests can explore the history of the neighboring 27-acre Union Cemetery, Kansas City’s oldest public cemetery. The Union Cemetery Historical Society will have volunteers at its office during the tour and will sell copies of the cemetery’s official history book, Kansas City’s Historic Union Cemetery: Lessons for the Future from the Garden of Time. Union Hill is sponsoring the event and several of its neighborhood businesses including Cafe Europa, Tower Tavern and Underdog Wine Co. will offer discounts, food and drink specials to Garden Tour attendees.

Half of the proceeds from the Garden Tour will support the Union Cemetery Historical Society, a nonprofit organization with a mission to restore, maintain, and preserve Union Cemetery. The other half of the proceeds will go to support the Union Hill Neighborhood Association and future garden tours.

At Domain City Center Apartments in Lenexa, Kansas, we believe it’s important to integrate yourself into the community, which is why we suggest attending this event. Meeting new people, having unfamiliar experiences, and joining neighborhood activities is the key to an exceptional lifestyle.
