Enjoy a Beloved Tale Live on Stage When You See the Wizard of Oz This Saturday

Since 1970, Theatre in the Park has been producing great musical theatre and engaging the community in performances under the stars. Thousands of performers, directors, designers, musicians, and crew have graced our stage and brought true live art to the citizens of the greater Kansas City area. Now, join Theatre in the Park for yet another incredible production when they present The Wizard of Oz on Saturday, August 10th!

When a tornado rips through Kansas, Dorothy and her dog, Toto, are whisked away in their house to the magical land of Oz. They follow the Yellow Brick Road toward the Emerald City to meet the Wizard, and en route, they meet a Scarecrow that needs a brain, a Tin Man missing a heart, and a Cowardly Lion who wants courage.

The wizard asks the group to bring him the broom of the Wicked Witch of the West to earn his help. This beloved tale, in which a Kansas farm girl travels over the rainbow to discover the magical power of home, has been entertaining audiences for generations.

The idea of presenting live theatre performances in a Johnson County park was launched in 1970 with the theatre's first season on a stage comprised of a few boards and bricks near a pond in Antioch Park. The early patrons were enthusiastic, supportive and so hungry for the arts that the park could not accommodate them all. After only two seasons, the stage was moved to an area in Shawnee Mission Park where the program thrived and the crowds continued to grow.

Celebrating its 50th Season in 2019, The Theatre in the Park continues a summer theatre tradition that has entertained audiences for generations. With an annual attendance of approximately 35,000 patrons, the Theatre shares the magic of live theatre with young and old alike and draws patrons from throughout the Greater Kansas City area.

Don’t miss this classic tale in a unique setting! Tickets to see The Wizard of Oz start at $6 and are available online at https://www.theatreinthepark.org. The Wizard of Oz runs approximately 2.5 hours with one 15-minute intermission.

At Domain City Center Apartments in Lenexa, Kansas, it is clear that we have it all, but we still feel obliged to inform you of all the events our community has scheduled. Please feel free to join in all of the fun during this premier event!
