How to Save When You’re Dining Out

Eating out at restaurants can be expensive. Instead of giving up dining out completely to stay within your budget, consider these tips to make it more affordable.

Eat early. Breakfast is usually cheaper than lunch, and lunch is usually cheaper than dinner. At dinner time, ask if you can order off of the lunch menu. The portions are usually still large, but are cheaper. Many restaurants offer “Early Bird Specials,” for those dining between 4:00 and 6:00 pm.
Always ask if there are any specials and watch for coupons for your favorite restaurants. Some community organizations sell coupon books as a fundraiser. These often include coupons for restaurants near you.

Is it your birthday? Many restaurants offer a free meal on your special day.
Consider sharing an entrée with someone else if you are not a big eater or order an appetizer as your meal.

If you are a big eater, all-you-can-eat buffets are a great value.
Skip the cocktails and desserts to keep your bill smaller, as their markup is very high. Order water instead of soda. It saves you money and is healthier, too.

Always take leftovers home. You may have another full meal in the waiting.

Check to see if your favorite restaurants offer a frequent dining card. Don’t forget to use it on every visit.
If you own a business, remember to keep your receipts to write off the expense on your taxes. Check with an accountant for the percentage allowed.

If you have children, look for places that have reduced price children’s menus. Watch for “Kids Eat Free” nights.

Consider bartering. If you have a special skill, service or product you could offer, talk with a restaurant owner or manager. Perhaps you can fill a need for him or her while getting some meals for free.
